Head Climbing Coach

The Head Coach at Austin Bouldering Project responsible for building, managing and coaching a competitive youth climbing team. In addition the Head coach will be responsible for climbing instruction. The Head coach is responsible for building and managing climbing instruction programs at Austin Bouldering Project. They train and manage climbing instructors for adult climbing classes.

This Coaching role designs climbing instruction programs that teach efficient movement and technical skills to the ABP climbing community. The role requires managing programming, coaching staff and training schedule. This role collaborates closely with other Austin Bouldering Project Managers to ensure the highest instruction and coaching standards are delivered to the ABP community.

Hours: Part-time 30hrs wk
Reports to: General Manager
Compensation: Hourly $20-25 DOE, medical/dental plan, PTO

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The Head Climbing coach will act as the point person for all youth climbing team needs. In addition they will facilitate adult instruction and duties at Austin Bouldering Project. The Head Climbing Coach would also act as a resource for both adult and youth climbing instruction programs. As a leader in the Austin Bouldering Project community, the Head Climbing Coach is to conduct themselves in a positive and professional manner at all times.

COMPETITIVE YOUTH TEAM HEAD COACH


  • Design and implement team training program
  • Define and oversee process for selecting members of competitive youth team
  • Schedule and attend team practices
  • Hire and manage coaching staff
  • Collaborate with Head Setter about team setting needs
  • Travel to Regional, Divisional, and National level competitions
  • Collaborate with other climbing gyms for team practices
  • Communicate season competition and event schedule to participants and their families
  • Utilize safe coaching practices that emphasize the health and safety of team members
  • Communicate regularly with participant’s families regarding each child’s development
  • Other duties as assigned

CLIMBING INSTRUCTION


  • Identify and address Austin Bouldering Project adult instruction needs.
  • Design multiple climbing instruction curriculums that span varying skill levels and goals.
  • Hire and train staff to implement adult instruction programs
  • Provide professional development and training opportunities for instruction staff
  • Act as a resource for youth instruction coaches and programs
  • Collaborate with Head Setter on setting needs for instruction programs
  • Collaborate with Programs Manager about youth programs instruction needs and curriculum
  • Advertise Austin Bouldering Project instruction program schedule to members
  • Under the direction of the General manager, check in with status, quality, and instructional needs of the ABP community
  • Other duties as assigned

SCOPE OF WORK

Significant autonomy to create and implement instruction training programs under direction of the General Manager.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Supervise and manage all adult instructors and coaching staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Many duties require the availability to work a flexible schedule based on business needs and events, including evenings and weekends. Staff duties often occur before and after operating hours.

Summer Youth Programs Instructor

Summer Youth Programs Instructors provide exemplary leadership and foster a safe and inclusive environment for youth programs participants. Instructors lead and facilitate climbing instruction, games and activities, across all youth programs and are expected to follow and uphold all ABP rules and policies related to youth instruction and programs. Austin Bouldering Projects Summer Camp is an 11 individual week program that runs June 4th-August 17th from 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday. Each week, youth are broken up into three age groups: 5-7, 8-12, and 13-17.

Reports to: Programs Manager
Compensation: $14/hr

ESSENTIAL DUTIES


ABP Summer Camp
  • Facilitate check-in, waivers, rental shoes, facility rules and orientation with ABP Summer Camp participants.
  • Follow and contribute to ABP Summer Camp daily schedule.
  • Attend training sessions and monthly staff meetings.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to Programs Manager about day to day activities.
  • Lead group activities in an articulate and engaging manner.
  • Constantly communicate with parents, coworkers and campers in a professional manner.
  • Actively participate in all camp activities with other staff and campers.
  • Promptly report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior or abuse towards youth.
  • Consistently engage campers in exciting and challenging activities while maintaining safety.

Group/Birthday Facilitation and Instruction

Facility Safety and Incident Response
  • Ensure that all participants are aware of the risks, rules, and regulations of the facility.
  • Actively promote risk mitigation through ongoing instruction and orientation.
  • Ensure the safety of participants, staff, and regular customers through group organization, oversight, and control.
  • Respond to any and all safety or health incidents following the Safety Manual and protocol.
  • Administration of first aid in accordance with Safety Manual and ABP protocol.
  • Documentation of incidents through incident report log.
  • Track and maintain Austin Bouldering Project Youth Program equipment.

Other duties as assigned

JOB REQUIREMENTS


  • 18 years of age.
  • Enjoy working with youth.
  • Available to work four week days with one weekend day preferred.
  • Ability to lift at least 40lbs.
  • Ability to stand/walk for 8 hours.
  • Previous customer service experience preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS

It is imperative to recognize that the gym’s clientele maintain excitement about the culture and community at the Austin Bouldering Project. Youth Programs Instructors work closely with children and families and are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible and respectful manner. Summer Youth Programs Instructors are, in many ways, the representative of the community supported by the ABP and must conduct themselves accordingly.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to stand on their feet for at least 8 hours. Many duties require a flexible schedule based on business hours and needs including weekend availability.

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS

The summer youth instructor position is a temporary staff position and will be scheduled anywhere between 15 and 40 hours a week within the ABP Summer Camp Program. Opportunities for additional positions at ABP are subject to availability and staffing needs.
