First Time & FAQ

What’s bouldering?

Bouldering is rock climbing, without using ropes or harnesses, on climbs that don’t go too high off the ground. Our boulders are usually thirteen to fifteen feet tall, and the tallest ones are sixteen to seventeen feet. Outside, boulderers move small mats and pads under the climbs. In our gym, the entire floor is a giant, squishy pad.

Our boulders have problems. Problems are climbing routes on the boulders. They consist of a series of carefully-placed holds which you climb from start to finish.

Problems can be easy or really really hard. That’s what makes it fun.

Do I need any special equipment?

The only thing you need to boulder is a pair of climbing shoes and a chalk bag (to keep your hands dry). Technically you don’t need a chalk bag but everyone uses them so we highly recommend it. Bring your own shoes and chalk bag or rent them from us. Rentals are free on your first visit. Barefoot climbing isn’t allowed, but you’re welcome to climb in your athletic shoes if you feel like it. Climbing shoes make it a lot easier.

Do I need to make a reservation?

Nope. Come boulder anytime we’re open. If you want information about our yoga and fitness classes, click here or if you want to learn about our regularly-scheduled Youth Programs, click here.

Who needs to sign a waiver?

100% of people. Even if you aren’t climbing. Waivers are here.
Minors must have a fully-completed waiver, signed only by a parent or legal guardian. No one else can complete a waiver on behalf of a minor.

Who can boulder? How old do you need to be to climb?

Bouldering is super accessible and easy to get into. You don’t need to have any previous experience, but it’s also physically pretty difficult. Typically, if you can do other sports, you can boulder. For a lot of people it’s easier to pick up bouldering than it is to learn other new sports (like tennis or bareback horse riding).

We don’t have a minimum age for climbing—we have Youth Programs for kids as young as 4. If you’re interested in bringing children on your own, we do have some pointers and requirements.

What should I wear?

Remember that scene in Rocky, when he charges up the stairs in his gray sweats, and all the kids are behind him and he’s shadow boxing heroically—that’s what we recommend wearing. Seriously, though, most people wear comfortable, agile clothes. Like outdoorsy pants, lululemon, athletic shorts, jeans (note: some people wear jeans for skiing). However, whether you wear shorts, tights, lycra, or hammer pants, we do ask that everybody (men and women) wears a shirt or tank top.

Anything I should do before our visit?

To save time, we’d recommend filling out our waiver. Also, check out our facility rules. If you have any questions, please give our staff a call at 512.645.4633.

Do you charge extra to go to a yoga or fitness class, or to use the exercise equipment?

Nope. You get all of it.

You can visit the Yoga & Fitness Page for information on classes and schedules.

Do I need to supervise my children?

Yes. Rock climbing is dangerous. Highly-attentive adult supervision is crucial for the safety of youth and others.

Any youth (younger than 14) must be actively supervised by the adult who is responsible for them during their visit to the gym. Any parent, guardian or chaperone responsible for a youth must maintain direct supervision over the youth during the entirety of their visit. An adult cannot supervise more than 3 youth at a time.

Youth under the age of 14 cannot attend Fitness and Yoga classes. Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Interested in getting your kids into Youth Programs? We have those.

Do you have ‘kid friendly’ climbing?

Of course.

We have several climbing walls and a play structure that surrounds comfortable chairs, benches, and tables. Indoor picnic style. We designed this spot for youth and families.

Bunch of options. Annual and monthly memberships for the regulars. Single months and punch-passes for the occassionals. Daypasses for first-timers and every-once-in-a-whilers. Family options for families. If you like awesome things, we recommend monthly memberships.

We have four different kinds of memberships.

Memberships are cool because you’ll end up coming more often. Also, members get two free passes per month for first time guests and discounts on classes, rentals, and retail.

Recurring Monthly Memberships (EFT)

Monthly Memberships are our favorite and are usually the best if you’re going to be climbing somewhat regularly (like once a week). Dues are automatically deducted from your checking account or credit card each month. Monthly memberships can be put on hold for $5/month (one month minimum) and reactivated for free at any time, with prorated dues covering your membership when you come back.
Also, you can cancel anytime. Easy peasy.

  • Adult Monthly Membership: $68/mo
  • Student & Youth Monthly Membership:$56/mo
  • Initiation for Monthly Membership: $40

Annual Memberships

Just like the other memberships, Annuals can be put on hold for $5/month (one month minimum) and reactivated for free at any time. However you slice it up, you get 12 months of active membership.
Obviously, they cost a little less than a full year of active Monthly Membership.

  • Adult Annual Membership: $750
  • Student & Youth Annual Membership: $615

Family Memberships

We like families. So we have this, which costs less than if everybody signed up independently.

  • Parent & Child Monthly Membership: $105/mo
    • Additional Family Member: $40/mo
    • Initiation for Family Monthly Membership: $40/Family
  • Parent & Child Annual Membership: $1,155
    • Additional Family Member: $440

Single-Month Memberships

They’re just that: unlimited access the gym for 30 days. If you’re going to be coming regularly, but only for a month or two, here you go.

  • Adult Single Month Membership: $86
  • Student & Youth Single Month Membership: $72

We have two good options for the first-time or occasional visitor: single-day passes and 10-punch daypasses.

A daypass gets you the whole gym for a day—bouldering, training areas, and yoga and fitness classes.
First time visitors get free shoe rentals.

  • Adult Daypass: $16
  • Student & Youth Daypass: $12
  • Adult 10-Punch: $130
  • Student & Youth 10-Punch: $100

Pricing does not include tax. Student & Youth over 17 must show a current student ID.

Supervision for youth under 14 years old is required at all times! 1 adult can supervise up to 3 youth at a time in the youth climbing areas. In the adult climbing area, 1 adult can supervise up to 2 youth.

To ensure the best check-in experience possible we require the names of everyone that will be climbing with your group at least 24 hours in advance. We want a big, friendly, welcoming and beautiful space to climb, exercise, and socialize. We want everyone under our roof to be healthy and have fun.

We made a ton of boulders. Surrounded by a ton of foam. Because we love climbing. We have a yoga studio, a fitness studio, huge spaces for fitness training and cardio, and a climbing training area inside of a boulder (it’s a big boulder). Our locker rooms have saunas. There’s a party room, a huge social lounge on the mezzanine, a kids and family climbing area, and comfortable places to crack open the laptop, or the newspaper.

Youth Safety

Bouldering is super fun. And kids are naturals at it. But rock climbing is dangerous and has many risks.

Before climbing, all participants under 18 must have a waiver signed only by a parent or legal guardian.

Un chaperoned drop-offs are not permitted. Youth must be actively supervised by their responsible adult at all times.

No jumping off structures.

No running, rough-housing, horseplay or acrobatics (flips, cartwheels, handstands, etc.).

Indoor voices. No yelling.

Fitness equipment (including the rope and gymnastic rings) may only be used by people 14 and over. No playing allowed on fitness equipment.

Never stand, sit, or walk in an area where another climber could fall. Always look at the climbing walls around you, especially when walking through the gym, to see where climbers are on the walls.

Never climb above, below, or near another climber. Please be considerate.

Never climb up the designated descents on the top-out structures.

Everyone at the Austin Bouldering Project must check in at the front desk at the beginning of every visit. If you have not checked in, you do not have permission to climb or use abp facilities.

Before beginning any fitness program or changing your physical activity patterns, you should always consult with your doctor or physician, particularly if you have been inactive, are overweight, or have or suspect any sort of medical condition that might be worsened by exercise.
